Common Mistakes When Sizing A PSA Nitrogen Generator - Avoid Over-Spec & Under-Spec Pitfalls

Many industrial buyers make costly mistakes during nitrogen generator sizing. Some over-spec capacity and waste investment; others pick undersized units that cannot satisfy real-world production requirements. Catalog nominal flow data cannot be directly used for final model selection, several practical working conditions will change actual output performance.

First, distinguish between standard flow Nm³/h and working flow. Manufacturer data sheet output is tested under standard temperature & pressure. High ambient temperature, high altitude will reduce real nitrogen output. If your factory locates in high-altitude area or workshop temperature stays high all year round, you need to leave reasonable capacity margin.

Second, confirm your actual required nitrogen purity. Many buyers simply tell suppliers “I need high-purity nitrogen” without giving exact percentage. Higher purity means much higher compressed-air consumption. Buying 99.999% unit when your process only needs 99.9% will cause continuous extra electricity expense month after month.

Third, consider peak gas consumption instead of average consumption. Many workshops have intermittent peak nitrogen demand during batch production. Calculating only average flow will lead to insufficient gas supply at peak time.

Do not let sales staff decide model only by your equipment type. Provide above-mentioned site parameters. A well-sized nitrogen generator balances initial cost and long-term running expense, avoiding both insufficient output and unnecessary over-investment. Take an action immediately.
